Being sustainable won't cost the earth
Here are a couple of examples of payback periods for different items that are more earth friendly. 300L/day capacity solar hot water system running at 90% savings efficiency will payback in a period of less than 8 years (including government rebate of $1500.00) compared to a conventional electric hot water system.
Here is a comparsion of different globes and there initial cost and cost of energy use over a period of time. Although both fluorescent and led lights may cost more initially they are cheaper in the long term.
A 10,000 L water tank with average rainfall of 50mm/month for 4 person house in a 21 square house. =120KL/year capture Therefore it would take approximately 12 -13 years to payback a 10,000 L tank at a cost of $1900.00. However, in areas of stage 4 restrictions (e.g. Geelong, Victoria) this savings capacity may mean that your garden does survive.
